Porto Azzurro
In 1947, the town was given permission to change from its old name of Porto Longone, which linked it to the prison situated in the fortress of Longone. It sits on the Gulf of Mola, the largest inlet on the eastern coast of Elba where boats, ferries and tourist yachts can tie up in the shelter of the bay. This town of fishermen and farmers is now a well-known resort.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna of Monserrato and the Spanish Church of the Sacred Heart of Maria are both well worth a visit for their history and culture.
Barbarossa and Mola are the two main districts of the town.

Fort Longone
This is also called Fort Saint Giacomo (James) and it was built in 1603 by the Spanish architect Garcia di Toledo for Philip III of Spain. The inspiration for the star-shaped structure came from the rock of the citadel of Antwerp.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna of Monserrato
This was built in 1606 on an isolated hilltop by the Spanish governor Pons y Leon, to worship the black Madonna as in Spain at the Santuario di Montserrat.

The beaches
Barbarossa, Reale, La Rossa (sand), Terranera (sand), La Pianotta (sand and rock).
